Session Descriptions
Beginning Robotics With Ozobots
Instructor: Caitlin McQuinn
Grades 3 and Up
Ozobots are tiny (cute) little robots that ideal for introducing robotics and coding to your students of all ages. Learn about how Ozobots teach the foundational skills of coding. In this screen-free session, participants will learn how to draw code on paper and watch their Ozobots act out their code in front of their eyes.

Cardboard: The Greatest Toy Alive!
Instructor: Caitlin McQuinn
Grades 3 and Up
This session will provide an entry point into learning various ways to use and manipulate cardboard to do basic building and construction. We will learn about a variety of ways to cut and manipulate cardboard before moving on to experimenting with building something a little more complex! (Also, don't miss Cardboard Automata in the evening open lab!)

Coding with SAM Labs
Instructor: Rob van Nood
Grades 3 and Up
New to coding and making? SAM Labs provides a well-rounded maker solution that teaches the fundamentals of coding while allowing you to explore a wide range of projects from music to science. Using a visual programming language, educators of all coding experience levels can get stuck into physical computing with this maker tool. Get hands-on in this session and see how you can bring coding and making into your school.
Required: Bluetooth 4.0 enabled laptop, Chromebook or tablet with the SAM Space app installed (free).

Engineering with Squirrels and the NGSS
Instructor: Conn McQuinn
Grades 3 and Up
A lesson series that takes advantage of the “Those Darn Squirrels” book. The premise is a vehicle for introducing the new NGSS engineering standards. After introducing the standards and reading the book, participants take the role of the squirrels and use a selection of everyday objects to design a squirrel launcher to help the squirrels. The constraints are that every group can only use the materials in the bag and there is only so much time. The success criteria focus on the distance launched. I’ve rarely seen staff get so into an activity before. They tend to design feverishly while also enjoying the friendly competition thoroughly amongst themselves.
