Intro to Self-Publishing: Showcasing Student Work in Print
Date: October 19th, 2019
Time: 8am - 5pm
Location: Lake Stevens School District Early Learning Center, Community Room
Address: 9215 29th St. NE Lake Stevens, WA 98258
Clock Hours: 8 hours
Cost: Free!

Self-publishing offers great opportunity to create print-on-demand books at surprisingly low cost, and it’s easier than you might think! This free full day workshop will give you the tools you need to get started, as well as the hands-on time to practice and decide how you want to use publishing in your own classroom. Whether you want to publish your students work for them or use book publishing as project-based learning, this workshop will get you started.

  • Learn about the world of self-publishing, how it works, the details of the various companies, how much it costs, and other free and low-cost tools to help you along the way.
  • Learn about the design choices that go into creating a book, including how genre impacts the choices you make, from the interior font to the colors on the cover.
  • Get hands on designing the interior text layout of a book using Microsoft Word, for both print and ebooks.
  • Create an eye-catching cover using free online resources.
  • Practice the process of uploading your files and preparing your book to be published.
  • Learn about other schools and classrooms where book publishing has been used to motivate student writers and connect their work to authentic audiences across the globe!

Participant Requirements:
  • PC or Mac laptop with Microsoft Word installed, and some prior experience using Microsoft Word. (As Google Docs unfortunately does not have the formatting options to create a print book, this workshop is not Chromebook compatible.) One laptop can be shared between two participants if you are attending with a friend who is willing to share.

Study Participation
This workshop is being offered as part of the instructor’s master’s degree capstone project, and as such it also includes an option to participate in a simple research study. If you opt to participate, you will be asked to complete a simple 10 question multiple choice test and a simple 10 question survey, before and after instruction.

Instructor Bio
Caitlin McQuinn has a unique combination of backgrounds in technology, publishing, and educational technology. She worked in Apple retail through college and after, teaching workshops and later working in tech support behind the “Genius Bar.” After leaving Apple, Caitlin worked in the world of self-publishing, creating a small business out of republishing her grandfather’s out-of-print novels, releasing books in print and digital formats.

Through all of this Caitlin often volunteered her assistance at education technology workshops. She herself has also taught workshops on maker education topics, from low tech to higher tech, and has co-run NCCE Maker Camp for the last three summers. After graduating, Caitlin will be pursuing opportunities that will allow her to split her time between teaching in a classroom and developing future workshops and other exciting programs.

Hosting a free workshop about self-publishing was such a huge event for a certain person. That's why I am so thankful to Caitlin McQuinn for being kind and generous enough for saying "yes!" to this challenge. I really appreciate the fact that she did this and her aim is something positive! She wants more students to learn the craft that's why she had the willingness to hold a workshop. Too bad because I was not able to catch it! I am praying that you'll have another league of this!
